Why do people believe that top-down leadership is a sustainable way to lead?
It causes anxiety & fear in our people.
So they do it because they fear punishment.
If you study great leaders, you will realise that they inspire you to become your best self from the inside-out.
They don't believe that ordering their team to success is a good long-term strategy.
In my work helping professionals lead from the inside-out,
I find many people traumatised by the hurt and pain caused by leaders who used fear and intimidation to get things done.
Pro tip!
People may follow top-down leadership in the short term but they will never call you a true leader in the long-term.
They will refer to you as the 'boss with demands'.
So what do we do, especially with the challenges of a new generation of staff?
1) Lead by drawing out the best in your people
2) Find out their strengths and help the team amplify them
3) Discover what they love doing and use that motivation to draw parallels with their work
4) Take the time to help them overcome their limiting beliefs through coaching and mentorship.
5) Developing people is a reward in itself
BONUS!
Think about leading in a sustainable way.
If your team discovers what motivates them, there is less micromanaging on the part of leaders.
The best investment you can make for them then, is the one for your team's best interest!
